About Greater McGlothen Memorial Temple COGIC

The McGlothen Memorial Temple Church of God in Christ was founded in 1945 under the leadership of Bishop G. W. McGlothen in the city of Pittsburg, CA. Worship services were first held in the basement of the First Baptist Church of Pittsburg, CA located at Fourth and Montezuma. The Church was later sold to Bishop G. W. McGlothen and the congregation. Bishop G. W. McGlothen loved to fellowship with his members and other denominations under his Pastorship and his vision of Auxiliaries was organized with a Deacon Board, Mothers Board, Sunday School, Usher Board, and Choir President. He pastored the congregation until September 1961.

In October 1961, John W. Moore was appointed as the new Pastor, with his wife Juanita Moore, and three children. Two more children were born, totaling five children: Beverly, Debra, Angela, Juanita, and John. This was John W. Moore’s second church as Pastor. John W. Moore first pastored from 1958 – 1960 at the Pentecostal Church of God in Christ in Santa Rosa, CA. The church continued to grow and became an important part of the Pittsburg Community. The church was remolded three times during the leadership of Pastor Moore and more auxiliaries were added. In 1985, the church was informed by the Redevelopment Agency of Pittsburg that they would have to relocate for the construction of new housing development. The Redevelopment Agency bought the property and assisted in helping to find another location for the church. The Pittsburg Furniture Store was founded and with the vision that was given to John W. Moore, it was remolded and became a place of worship which is now called Greater McGlothen Memorial Temple Church of God in Christ.

On July 20, 1986, Pastor John W. Moore, members, and guests marched from Fourth and Monezuma to their new location of 550 Black Diamond Street, in Pittsburg, CA. The Choir and members sang “We Come this far by Faith” and “Leaning on the Lord” as they marched to their new location. In November 1987, the Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce presented a Beautification Award to the Greater McGlothen Memorial Temple Church of God in Christ. Through the leadership and vision of Pastor John W. Moore this facility exceeded an asset value of more than $350,000.00. On January 14, 1998, Pastor John W. Moore received an honorary Doctor of Diversity degree from Zion College of Biblical Studies in Vancouver, Washington where he served for three years. He served as President of the YPWW (Young People Willing Workers. He was also appointed as Superintendent where he served in the Pittsburg District. He was appointed as the President of the Second Saturday Union meetings of the California Northwest Jurisdiction where he served for three years. He was promoted by Bishop W.W. Hamilton to the Executive Board of California Northwest Jurisdiction, where he served until his health failed.

The late Pastor John W. Moore was dedicated, faithful, and committed to all his duties and unto God. He was called from his labor of love to be in the presence of the Lord on May 31, 2001. One October 17, 2001 the torch was passed on to Elder Travis Dell Herron as the new pastor. Now Pastor Travis Herron with his wife Missionary Dorothy Herron has taken the church to higher heights., Pastor Herron has added to the service on Sunday Pastoral Teaching and New Membership class.
